THE METAMORPHOSIS
Franz Kafka
When Gregor awakes in Franz Kafka’s
Metamorphosis, he finds himself turn into a gigantic insect. He considered that
it is a dream which reflects on the dreary life of a traveling salesman. Then
he figure out that is true, he has turned into an insect. He knows it is a
disaster both to him and his family. He cannot go to work or do anything with
such a body. This story is talking about Gregor and his family’s change after
he becomes an insect. What I want to analysis next is the change of his family’s
attitude by his appearance.
First, when Gregor hind out he
turn into a giant insect, he memories that his family’s situation. “In any case, right now I have to
get up. My train leaves at five o’clock.” (5)Gregor still want to go work, he
do not want to be late. It shows his hard working. In his family, he works as a
traveling salesman in order to provide money for his sister and parents. His
parents do not have work and his sister still a student. “Gregor wanted to answer in detail
and explain everything, but in these circumstances he confined himself to
saying, ‘Yes, yes, thank you mother. I’m getting up right away.’”?(7) It shows
his fealty. As a son, he does not want his family know what has changed of his
appearance. It will be a great shock for his family. Due to his family’s
situation, he used to be the most important one in the family. He earns the
money for family and pay for all the debt for his parents.
However, it cannot be hidden
forever. When the manager came to his house in order to figure out the reason
he do not go to work, they finally find that Gregor has become an insect. “‘Help,
for God’s sake, help!’ She held her head bowed down, as if she wanted to view
Gregor better…When she reached the table, she sat down heavily on it, as if
absent-mindedly, and did not appear to notice at all that next to her coffee
was pouring out onto the carpet in a full stream from the large overturned
container.”(27-28). This is what his mother’s behave when Gregor rush out of
his room. “The manager was already on the staircase. His chin level with the
banister, the manager looked back for the last time…the manager must have
suspected something, because he made a leap down over a few stairs and
disappeared, still shouting ‘Huh!’ The sound echoed throughout the entire
stairwell.” He will lose his job certainly, but how about the next part that
how his families deal with this trouble.
In the second part, after they
calm down, they start look after Gregor. His families begin working once again
because they lose the only source of income. “By the door he first noticed what
had really lured him there: it was the smell of something to eat. For there
stood a bowl filled with sweetened milk, in which swam tiny pieces of white
bread.”“Thus, he had a long
time to think undisturbed about how he should reorganize his life from
scratch.” At this time, Gregor still have hope for the future, and his parents
and sister sympathize with his sufferings. Gregor’s mother, as a mother, she
wants to enter his room. It proves too much for her, she suffers from the sympathy
and her fear at Gregor's new appearance. At this time, although Gregor become
the excess baggage of his family, they still look after him and wish it will
pass by someday.
Unfortunately, as time goes by,
Gregor’s situation becomes worse. His family cannot understand him anymore. At
first Greta volunteers to feed him and clean his room. However, she is tired of
look after such an insect even if it is her brother, and she says:” we must get
rid of it…”(85). “you must try to get rid of the idea that this is Gregor… if
this were Gregor, he would have realized long ago that human beings can’t live
with such a creature…”(86) so finally, Gregor has been locked in his little
room until he dead. “‘What now?’ Gregor
asked himself and looked around him in the darkness.”(88) Gregor feels so
hopeless by his experience. He used to be the only source of income of his
family. But now, his families want to get rid of him.
Finally, Gregor dies a charwoman
deal with his corpse. And now the family is getting well, husband and the wife
find their daughter become “a beautiful and voluptuous young woman.”(96) This
story is ending by Gregor’s dead, his family get well expect him.
As a conclusion, what I analysis is
the change of his family’s attitude which is worked by his appearance. First,
when Gregor find out he turn into a giant insect, he memories that his family’s
situation. He is the only source of income of his family and he is such a
fealty son. But his change in appearance shocks his family. When they calm
down, they start look after Gregor with sympathize. However, their patience
fade away as time goes on. Finally, they want to get rid of Gregor. The story
has ending by Gregor’s death.

The Metamorphosis
Determine
element: Gregor’s appearance
Literary review:
The writing background is that from
1914 to 1918, the First World War, many capitalist countries economic
recession, social unrest, the people live in hot water. The darkness of the
reality, the pain of life, make people lose faith in capitalism society, on the
one hand, to seek a way out, reform, on the one hand and in loneliness,
decadent, despair. The end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th
century, some artists think the world is chaos, with a clear mind their
writing, criticizing capitalism relationships and criticism by human social
system. Before and after the First World War and before and after the Second
World War, modernist literature came into being. Modernist literary works
reflect the capitalist society of the dark, cold relations between person and
person, to the despair of the society. Art emphasizes on using extreme
exaggeration that the performance of the quirky, depicting the distortion of
human nature, the instinct of a man and unconscious subjective feeling, dig the
individual intuition, instinct, unconscious, dream, abnormal psychology and
half crazy, crazy behavior, and psychology. Modernism of outstanding literary
works explores the human mind, to reveal the inner world provides a new
artistic technique.
Franz Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” is a twentieth-century classic that
invites various interpretations, but all commentators agree that it is a story
about estrangement and alienation. That thesis, however, does not account for
me baffling ending of the story.
“Metamorphosis” is the
tale of Gregor, a traveling salesman who finds his work loathsome and
meaningless. He awakes one morning and finds he has turned into a “gigantic
insect”. His change brings disaster to his family. Their torment is too much
for Gregor’s sister to bear, and she says:” we must get rid of it…”(124). Later
she continues,” you must try to get rid of the idea that this is Gregor… if
this were Gregor, he would have realized long ago that human beings can’t live
with such a creature…(125)
This
point is, however, that the creature is Gregor, and the implication of the
denial is that only when the family refuse to recognize the true nature of
Gregor (the loathsome aspect of wasted living) can life remain tolerable.
Gregor
dies, and a charwoman disposes of the corpse. Now the family is rejuvenated and
the husband and wife suddenly notice “their daughter’s increasing
vivacity”(132) she has bloomed into a pretty girl with a good figure
Why
has this metamorphosis in the daughter taken place? The story sadly implies
that only false illusion can become a saving ideal, only under its grip can
life blossom.
There is quite evidently a
spiritual progress from human-insect mongrel to purebred insect as the story
unfolds. If i am correct, there is also an altogether more dramatic physical
progress than has hitherto been noted. The human, encrusted with the
coleopterous, and gradually absorbed by it.-TOM HARTMAN, Sweet briar collage
Gregor’s transformation
completely alters his outward appearance, but it leaves his mind unchanged,
creating a discord, or lack of harmony, between his mind and body. When he
first gets out of his bed after waking, for instance, he tries to stand
upright, even though his body is not suited to being upright. He also thinks of
going to work, despite the fact that he can’t by any means do so, and when
Grete leaves him the milk at the beginning of Part 2, he is surprised to find
he doesn’t like it, even though milk was a favorite drink when he was human. In
essence, he continues to think with a human mind, but because his body is no
longer human, he is unable at first to reconcile these two parts of him.- by

Response of I bought a little city
Donald
Barthelme’s short story I bought a little city is talking about how He did to
his little city. As the owner of this city, he can do everything he wants. Just
like he said in the story that he shot six thousand dogs in his city and he
wants to occupy sam’s wife. “I am the sole owner and I
make all the rules.” He said this in the story. But
I think it’s totally worry. He just bought this city, it doesn’t mean that he
can own all the people in his city. Human are all free, no one can own others.
I think he can do whatever he wants to his city but he cannot do anything to those
lives in this city. You'll roast in Hell in the eternal flames and
there will be no mercy or cooling drafts from any quarter. what the man said to
he is what I think to this man.
Response of A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings
A very old man with enormous wings is a short
story that a old man with enormous wings came to a small village unconsciously.
This old man maybe is an angel. He helps the little boy and punishes the woman
who had been changed into a spider. He helps those people to get rid of trouble
but people cannot understand him. Finally the angel leaves this village. As I concerned,
he maybe try to find another place to help people and in order to find a place
where people can understand him and everyone will respect him. I think he just
want to find a place where he can live. He does not want to be a leader or
anyone, just want to have a peaceful life. It is a simple wish but also a hard
one. It seems easy for a normal people but for an angel, it is so hard for him
to get rid of others’ attention. Although he is such a nice angel, people
cannot treat him as a nice person.
Read and Respond
Read and Respond: What is the genre of the
short story? What are its characteristics? How should we define it Chekhov,
Anton. “The Lament”
The lament is talking a story about a
cabdriver, Iona Potapov, whose son is dead for a week. However, in this whole
week, he never found a people to pour out all his words. Every passenger has no
patience to listen for a second. They laugh at the cabdriver or refuse to
listen. Finally, cabdriver can only talk to his little horse. Iona’s feelings
are too much for him and he tells the little horse the whole story. As a old
man without any friends and relative, the only one can listen to him is his
little horse. In my words, this is the custom of the world. You cannot offer
others any benefit for listen to you, so why they need to listen to you, a poor
cabdriver. They spend money just want to catch up not spend money to listen a
story about the dead of cabdriver’s son. Due to the lack of sympathy and
patience, no one want to listen to such a cabdriver.
