Response to The Handmaid’s Tale

    The Handmaid’s Tale is such a long story that i have never read before. I spend a lot of time to focus on it. I am not a man that like reading book even it is in Chinese. In order to understand this story better, I search for the introduction of this story. This story is talking about future, with a fundamentalist theocracy ruling the territory of what had been the United States. It is classificated as science fiction or speculative fiction.
    These early chapters show the background of the story. Handmaid is a special name for this type of woman. Women in that country is only been treated as a machine to give birth to a child. Offred is the protagonist and narrator. Having proven fertile, she is considered an important commodity and has been placed as a handmaid in the home of the Commander.
    when i read chapter 2, Offred sits in a room that seems at first like a gymnasium. However, as a matter of fact, The room is like a prison in which all means of defense, or escape by suicide or flight, have been removed. The room is like a government-ordered prison. I am confused that how can the government set a rule like this and there are no person stand up to point out that the rule should be broken.

response of boy marries hill

    Boy Marries Hill is a short story about love. before i read this story, i cannot believe that a boy can marry hill. It is hard to accept it so i start to read with my question.
    Tapesh tell Darshini that he have to marry the hill because of his mother. So he wants to break with Darshini. It is a ridiculous reason to break up. Even i think it is a excuse just for get rid of Darshini. Then Darshini lies to Tapesh about the pregnancy in order to get him back.
    People always be selfish when they deal with love. Everything that you pay for the one you love will disappear. However, time is the antidote to heal those broken heart.

Response of genesis

    Genesis comes from the Bible, which is the most important book in western world. I am not a Christian, I am a Buddhist. So I was not so pleasure to read the Genesis. I just read the Genesis as a story.

I am so confused about the Genesis. There are so many questions in my mind after reading the Genesis. How can the god create anything he wants? Why the human in the ancient times can live for almost one thousand years? Why the god create human and everything in the world, but in the end he wants to destroy everything? One thing that I do not like the Genesis is that there are so many names in such a short page. I even cannot recognize those names.
As a matter of fact, I think it is interesting for me to read. I like reading stories especially talking about the ancient times. In the Genesis, the most interesting human I think is the Cain. Although he kills his brother and people always think Cain is evil. The LORD exile him, however, in order to protect him get rid of others and the animals. It shows that LORD still loves Cain. 

Moments of Light in O'Brien

    In the story,“How to tell a Tell a True War Story" the "light" appears for the first time in "quadruple canopy, no sunlight at all". In my opinion, "no sunlight" means dead, nothing but darkness that make people fear.
    when Curt Lemon dead, the sunlight appears. " the way the sunlight came around him and lifted him up" . The sunlight along with Lemon's death. It maybe means the paradise. Lemon will be sent to the paradise after his death. Another though is that the sunlight kill Lemon. The sunlight appears and when it disappears, Lemon lost his life too. It seems like sunlight is the soul-bringer, sunlight takes Lemon away.

week 2 response for "how to tell a true war story"

    After reading this story, I feel a little hurt. I am a man that do not like read some story which tell a sad story. But this time I try to finish it and learn something new. The author Tim O'Brien uses flashback to show this story. At first he tell reader that  Rat lost his bast first in the war, and he wrote a touching letter to the great guy's sister but he never get writes back. Obviously, Rat feels  very sad about this. As my opinion, I think maybe this letter never be sent to Curt Lemon's sister so that this girl can never writes back. Everything can happen during the war.
    As the author says in his story, this guy who dead is a crazy boy . I remember that on Halloween, he paints up his body all different colors and puts on this weird mask and goes out on ambush almost stark naked, just boots and balls and an M-16. I like Curt Lemon because he always can find some interesting thing during this cruel war. Although he finally lost his life because his nature.
    The thing that i cannot understand in the essay is what they did to a water buffalo. This happens after Curt Lemon' death. They find the buffalo when higher in the mountains. Rat shot it without any sympathy. The most impressed me is that baby buffalo suffer this but do not make a sound. After i read this, i even feel gastric disorder causing nausea.
    Anyway, I learn a lot of things by this true story. Something that I never know about the war.

week 1 Read and Respond

    This is the first week of our spring semester. We are supposed to read some tales of 1001 Arabian Nights.

    “The Story of King Shahryar and His Brother”is the beginning of 1001 Arabian Nights. the king Shahryar and his brother are both betrayed by their wife. After killing their wife and the loathsomely black, two brothers leave the country. After they meet the devil they change their mind and back to the country. Then everything has changed, the king Shahryar gets a habit that kill a girl every day. In order to stop this, the daughter of Chief Wazir appear. She wants to help the king Shahryar to change. 

    Another tale is talking about the bull and ass. It is an interesting story. But after i read the tale, one thing still confuse me that why the merchant says that if he tell the truth to his wife, he will die. It is interesting that a human can understand what animal talking about. At the end he follows the idea of chicken to give his wife a lesson. 

    the conclusion of 1001 Arabian Nights is about Scheherazade had change the king's mind. Not only she does not die, the king Shahryar will never kill any girls. Interesting tales and happy ending can always make me happy, I spend a happy time with those tales.
